Aetna (NYSE: AET) and Jefferson Health System (JHS), the largest health care system in Southeastern Pennsylvania, announced that they have reached a new two year agreement.
Under the new agreement, members of Aetna commercial and Medicare Advantage health plans will be able to continue receiving covered inpatient health care services from JHS facilities and employed physicians. Those facilities include Magee Rehabilitation Hospital; Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, which includes Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, and Methodist Hospital; and Main Line Health, which includes Bryn Mawr Hospital, Paoli Hospital, Riddle Memorial Hospital, Lankenau Medical Center and Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital.
“This contract is very good news for Aetna members in Southeastern Pennsylvania,” said Robert Kleman, Aetna’s vice president of network development for the Southeastern Pennsylvania market. “Jefferson’s facilities and doctors have been integral parts of Aetna’s network in this area for many years, and we’re pleased that our members will be able to continue to access their health care services.”
“We are pleased to have negotiated and finalized an agreement which will keep the nine JHS hospitals available to members of Aetna’s commercial and Medicare Advantage health plans through at least 2012,” said David F. Simon, JHS Executive Vice President. “Aetna provides health benefits to more than 1 million people in the areas we serve in Eastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware, and it is important to our hospitals and physicians that those Aetna members continue to have access to the care we provide.”
Headquartered in Radnor, Pennsylvania, the members of Jefferson Health System have more than 14,800 full-time employees, 2,435 beds and 3,400 medical staff members. Among other accolades, JHS hospitals have received national recognition as among America’s best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, and physicians affiliated with JHS hospitals are included in Philadelphia Magazine’s annual list of the best local doctors.
