Aetna recognized as one of the 50 most community-minded companies in the United States

Aetna has been recognized for the sixth consecutive year as one of America’s most community-minded companies in the United States by The Civic 50, an annual initiative that identifies and recognizes companies for their commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities where they do business. Points of Light, the largest organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service, conducted the survey in partnership with True Impact.

“Building a healthier world: It’s a mission Aetna proudly pursues every day. In doing so, we keep our priorities straight — people, planet, then profit — to ensure that our work benefits people and preserves the environment, which ultimately drives long-term business success and profitability” noted Chairman and CEO Mark Bertolini in Aetna’s most recent Corporate Social Responsibility Report (CSR) report. “Aetna’s efforts to build a healthier world encompass how we treat our employees, improve the lives of customers, and effect positive change in community health.”

The Civic 50 was created in 2012 to measure corporate civic engagement and recognizes companies that incorporate socially responsible business practices and community leadership into their culture. A working group of leading researchers, industry thought leaders and corporate advisors provided strategic guidance on the program’s objectives, including defining indicators, developing methodology and identifying partners and participants.

Aetna’s Impact in the Community

As highlighted in its most recent Corporate Social Responsibility Report (CSR) report, Aetna’s efforts to strengthen communities go beyond its breadth of work and are ingrained in the company’s values – integrity, excellence, inspiration and caring. By combining philanthropy, community engagement and policy leadership, Aetna is able to improve health for both individuals and communities.

With a distinguished history of community involvement, the Aetna Foundation remains committed to improving health in local communities and large populations alike. In 2016 and 2017 Aetna and the Aetna Foundation awarded more $46 million dollars to communities and nonprofit organizations.

Aetna’s employees, directors, and retirees recognize the need be involved in their own community. In 2016 and 2017, they have donated more than $14.6 million through the company’s matching gift program. About 30,000 Aetna employees participated in employee engagement initiatives and employees also have donated more than 945,000 volunteer hours to nonprofit organizations over this time period.
