Depression: A disease that affects more than 350 million people

Mar 03 2015

No one can expect to be happy all of the time. Feeling upset or sad sometimes is a normal part of life. But when those feelings start to disrupt your life, you might be dealing with depression. Depression is a disease that just won’t go away. It hangs on and can be painful for you and those close to you.

It can be caused by a number of factors, including a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Unfortunately, lack of awareness, stigma and embarrassment prevent many of those with depression from seeking treatment.

Aetna offers an online depression self-assessment tool that anyone can use to help determine if some professional care and treatment might be in order. Of course only a qualified physician or mental health provider can provide a complete assessment and diagnosis of depression. Aetna’s assessment tool is not designed to provide a comprehensive assessment or diagnosis of depression, but it’s a good place to start if you or someone you care about is wondering whether their persistent feelings might be something more than sadness.

Remember, if you are concerned about any aspect of your health, regardless of what the assessment shows, you should seek further evaluation from your doctor.
