“Wait-and-see” attitude on accountable care won’t work

Hospitals and medical groups that are just “putting their toe in the water” of accountable care will not have as much success as organizations that say, “We see this is the future, and we are committed to it as an organization.” That’s according to Charles Kennedy, M.D., who talks about Aetna’s move into accountable care and cautions health system leaders against standing on the sidelines, in a Q&A in the Fall 2014 issue of Leadership magazine, published by the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Kennedy, now population health officer for Healthagen, an Aetna company, says leadership commitment is the single most important factor Aetna looks for when it selects health care systems for accountable care relationships.
