Building Better Health: Innovative Strategies from America’s Business Leaders

Sep 16 2014

Health care spending in the U.S. is approaching $2.8 trillion, or nearly 20 percent of all U.S. spending. American companies and their employees bear about 45 percent of this cost. To address this issue, the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) and a group of nine chief executives are sharing the successful strategies they have used to improve the health and wellness of their employees.

The CEO Council on Health and Innovation (CEO Council) – whose members employ more than 1 million people and provide health care coverage for 150 million individuals in the United States – recently released a report, Building Better Health: Innovative Strategies from America’s Business Leaders.

Aetna Chairman, CEO and President Mark Bertolini is a member of the CEO Council. He described why Aetna is part of this initiative:  “With the overwhelming costs of health care, we realize the need to solve the health care problem in order to have a healthy and productive population and well-functioning economy. We are creating new conversations about how health care is delivered and paid for, and how today’s system often gets in the way of delivering the health care people need, when they need it, at a cost they can afford. By sharing our message, conveying information and results, and opening our minds to new thinking, we are helping to build the high quality, truly integrated health care system necessary to support global needs.”

Several Aetna programs are highlighted in the report, including:

  •  iTriage, one of the most popular health care apps that has been downloaded nearly 13 million times.
  • Innovative employee wellness programs that help employees better manage stress and reduce their risk for Metabolic Syndrome.
  • Successful Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), including the ACO that Aetna developed with Banner Health Network in Phoenix.
